It’s worth clearing up one thing first: traditional Tantra isn’t primarily about sex. But in modern “neo-Tantra,” sexuality is used as one pathway for awareness and connection - with oneself or with a partner.
Here are the core ideas when Tantra is applied to sexuality:
Presence over performance
The focus shifts away from goals (like orgasm) toward being fully aware of sensations, emotions, and connection in the moment. Attention is treated as the main “practice.”
Slowness and intentionality
Movements, touch, and even breathing are slowed down. This isn’t just aesthetic—it helps increase sensitivity and deepen awareness.
Breath as a tool
Conscious breathing (sometimes synchronized with a partner) is used to regulate arousal, stay grounded, and build connection.
Energy awareness
Many teachings draw on ideas like Kundalini, framing sexual arousal as a form of energy that can be circulated through the body rather than just released.
Connection over climax
Orgasm isn’t the endpoint. The emphasis is on emotional and energetic connection—with yourself or a partner—rather than a quick finish.
Communication and consent
Clear, ongoing consent and open communication are essential. This includes expressing boundaries, desires, and checking in with each other.
Whole-body experience
Instead of focusing only on genitals, attention expands to the entire body—touch, eye contact, and subtle sensations all become part of the experience.
Integration of intimacy and awareness
Sex is treated as a form of meditation or mindfulness practice, where intimacy becomes a way to explore consciousness rather than just physical pleasure.
Some modern interpretations go further into specific practices including eye-gazing, synchronized breathing, separating ejaculation from orgasm, and extended intimacy without rushing to climax.
If you’d like to learn how to apply these principals to your own intimate life, join us on Tuesday May 12th 2026 at 6:30 pm at Jellywink or on Zoom for our Intro to Tantra workshop, led by Tantric practitioner Kym Cutter (she/her).
